Amici
by Chet Marlett

Deep in the heat of the wild wilderness,

Deep in a midsummer's summer day,
The two friends sat face to face -
Knowing bird on his finger, and he in the earth,
Speaking together through the silence of space.

Bird's song twit-twittered into the glade,
backed by the chorus of lush, greenery wood
Bathed in the sun's shine, warmed by the hand
That connected its sky to the fertile land
and the ancient, gnome-like, witchery one.

Seemingly at rest, asleep, perhaps,
Rooted in quiet,
Such an elder son of the forest,
Rooted in patience, still as a stone -
Sensing the heartbeat of the heart of the earth,
Through the blue blades of grass 'neath his tranquil trunk
And his rich, blue veins of bark.

Amused by bird's chit-chatter dreams of song
And the way things touch one another,
Contemplating, musing,
Listening to the song within the silence,
And the songlines that stretch beyond the beyond,
Holding together the very air.

His rooty fingertips renewing bird's soul,
Reassuring her, in the particular:
That sky is always sky blue,
That trees talk when the wind is blowing,
That all crows are left-handed (so they think)
That strength is much the same as caring.

Of things that are, and of the things to come,
In a language more powerful than measure,
Silent, impeccable, imperceptible,
Beyond the limit of human sound,
Of holding together, forever,
Of harmony.

The gentle sentinel, still as stone,
His secret smile sparking the blazing life within,
The one who sees beyond Arcturus,
Charged with the flaming fires of the sun,
Waiting.
Waiting, content for now...
Waiting for that shift of wind,

Waiting to shift the stars.
